Canada Broadcast Standards Council has ruled that the 1985 Dire Straits tune "Money for Nothing" is no longer acceptable for member stations to air in original format. The ruling was based on a complaint filed before the Broadcast Standards Council who represent most commercial radio stations in Canada
"Airwaves are public property and without context the song could be taken as repetitive emotional assault" Graeme Meyer, a civil rights activist said.
"It is not censorship in context that airwaves are public property and are regulated for content and member stations agree to abide by certain broadcast standards as privilege of being a broadcaster"
"The repetitive nature of most commercial radio makes any argument about censorship moot" he added
