Stop United Way's and other's adult literacy programs -- they are racist -- and they promote a view that individuals from other countries are stupid
The programs have devastating impact on student's upward social and economic mobility

ReplyDeleteDear Tim Felsky: For the most part adult literacy programs are geared for recent arrivals to Canada. For the most part individuals who have the money, status or ability to travel to Canada and be accepted as landed immigrant are the elite wealthy or well connected. When well-intentioned volunteers tell these individuals they are illiterate it sends the individual in the wrong career path and well-intentioned immigrant often wishes to integrate and cooperates. If intention is integration then have coffee houses don't paint intelligent individuals from abroad as illiterate it is injustice
ReplyDeleteI don't think any one with the money or status would be dis-served by ongoing language education in English or French, that is if they have trouble reading traffic signs or medical labels. How can you argue that would be a negative? The economists agree it would provide a benefit and your counterlogic is based on gut instinct?
