Understanding Age of Consent

Updated 6 Jan 2011 10:32 AM ET by meyer4m.blogspot.com

In Canada Age of consent to sexual activity is 16 (it was raised from 14 years in May of 2008) Source: Dept. of Justice

Any sexual activity without consent is criminal.  An intoxicated individual may not be able to consent

If the sexual activity is deemed exploitive such as where the victim is exploited by an individual in position of authority, the applicable age of consent is 18

A 14-15 year old may consent to sexual activity if the age difference between the consenting party is less than five years

Canada also has extradition arrangements with several countries for which some argue interfere in national sovereign laws

Thailand for example has challenged Canada's criminal extradition treaty
